Long Read

Three tactical shifts that quietly reshaped the title race

The headlines belong to goals and red cards. The title race, though, has been decided by quieter adjustments: a third-man run that didn't exist last season, a back-three that became a back-five, and a press trigger that activates six yards higher than twelve months ago.

01

The inverted full-back. When the wide centre-back steps into midfield, the opponent's winger follows — and the half-space opens for an overlapping run that the side hasn't shown all year.

02

Mid-block becomes a low block. The press no longer triggers in the opposition half. Coaches have accepted territorial concession in exchange for cleaner regains.

03

The third-man run. Goals from cut-backs have risen sharply. We track the routes and the players who have made them a feature of their game.

Women's football deserves its own column, not a footnote

We treat the women's game as the primary competition it is. The Champions League, the domestic leagues and the international calendar get their own reporters, their own previews and their own match reports.

Editorial Policy →

Where do your live scores come from?

Our feed aggregates licensed data providers and updates every sixty seconds. The status, score, possession and shot counts on every match card come from that feed. We mark fixtures with delayed or postponed feeds clearly, and we never invent numbers to fill a panel.

How fast are match reports published?

For headline fixtures we publish an on-the-whistle report within five minutes of full-time, followed by a longer tactical read once post-match press conferences end. Lower-division and overseas fixtures are usually covered within two hours.

What is your correction policy?

Corrections are dated, noted at the top of the article, and never silently rewritten. If we get a score, a name, a quote or an attribution wrong, you will see a clear note explaining what changed and when.

Do you cover women's sport?

Yes, as a primary beat rather than an aside. The Women's Champions League, the WSL, the NWSL and the international calendar are covered by named reporters with their own editorial pages.

Can I get alerts for one team only?

Yes. The Sports Briefing has separate opt-ins for the morning summary, individual team alerts, and weekly long reads. You can pick any combination and unsubscribe with a single click.

Are transfers ever reported without confirmation?

Only when reporting is attributed and the source is named. Speculation is clearly labelled, and never sits on the homepage next to confirmed deals.

Independent reporting that gets the basics right

We are a small editorial desk that prefers verification over volume. Our reporters are named, our sources are attributed where possible, and our corrections are visible.

If you spot an error, write to us — we will publish the fix and credit you for catching it.
